WHAT THE WHAT

Finished Cold Days last night and I’m still trying to wrap my head around everything that happened. I enjoy Jim Butcher books for the sheer moving hysteria of them. Like, the majority of this book took place over something like 30 hours and it was crazy how much stuff happened to Harry.

And no, I’m not just talking about his penchant for getting hit in the head with baseball bats. Which happens amusingly often.

ButMolly is the new Winter Lady?!? I…

And Cat Sith. Is that, like, permanent? Because I want the original, scary as “Weren’t there six of you just now?” all get out, I want that guy back. That guy hated Harry and had to fetch Harry a Coke. You can’t get better than that!!

I’m rather ambivalent toward Molly being the Winter Lady, though I’m happy that the White Council will not be a problem from her. Her deal with the svartalves made me raise my eyebrows, as did her new, amazing poise, but…Winter Lady? As in, we’re going to get more fae stuff? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy it in small doses, but like Harry, I was getting fed up with the backstabbing and roundabout way of dealing with things.

That said, Harry freaking battled Santa Claus and took control of the Wild Hunt. MURPHY ON A MOTORCYCLE TAKING PLACE IN THE WILD HUNT.

Every piece of the book that I didn’t like no longer matters because THAT HAPPENED.

Also, saw Looper last night. I’ve been following the film pretty closely, so I knew something of what I should expect, but it was obvious that the people next to me did not. When the credits started rolling, they were like, “Well, not recommending that to anyone ever!” Meanwhile, two seats away, I’m grinning because seriously, what a neat film. It bends your brain a little and I called a lot of the major things, but it kept me on my toes and you really, really can’t go wrong with Emily Blunt OR Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

I need to kick this headache and get to writing because this cracky story is not going to write itself. And then I get to write a story with Tony Stark as the protagonist, which will be a first for me!

AT LAST I can babble to you about the book without fear of spoilage. Phew.

I think Cat Sith is alive - Harry just knocked him into Lake Michigan, is all. Mab can grab him freeze him in ice for a while like she did to Lea, and drive that Nemesis right out of his head. Heaven knows he was trying to fight the infestation on his own. And once he's cured he can go back to being the homicidal devil-cat we know and love.

Molly...yeah, mixed feelings. I think it makes Harry's escape from the Knighthood both more urgent and more difficult - he might have years of experience fighting off malign mental influences, but Molly had just barely started getting her shit together arguably for the first time since she manifested, so who knows what the Lady's mantle will do to her. Harry needs to find some massive favor to pull in exchange for getting her out of there. Unless it turns out she likes it, I guess.

I'm thinking getting Mother Winter's walking stick back might do the trick. Ebenezar, care to give it up? :P

Yeah... There's just so much great stuff in that book. Molly becoming the new Lady Winter? Not of my favorite moments, especially now that Harry has to go talk to the Carpenters and tell them what happened to their eldest. There's a lot of bitter-sweet moments in this one.
I'm with Sabra, I'd guess we're going to be seeing Cat Sith again. Especially now that Harry has pulled Mab down and given her his instructions on how their relationship is going to work. Seeing as the transformation into the nut that Maeve was will take time Molly is going to making her own impression as Lady Winter, at least for a while. And when the revelation of what's going on at the Gate is shown to her? She'll be willing to lend a hand or two.
You've got to love that the MORE he fights with her, the more she is convinced that he's going to be the best Knight Winter has ever seen. Given what he did at his birthday ball? I'm fairly well convinced.
I also find it interesting that Harry is getting more and more of the Fae who are convinced he's their kind of stand up guy.
And how adorable is Toot's crush? The more the little lady fae kicks his butt the more he likes her. And she doesn't like pizza!

The Wild Hunt was one of the highlights for me as well. I particularly enjoyed the idea that the hounds were folks who gave into their predatory impulses on Halloween. Though dueling with the Erlking and Santa pretty much blanked out most of the rest of my initial reading.

It'll be Molly breaking the news to her parents, actually. Which makes sense - she's an adult, her apprenticeship is over, and she's kind of Harry's boss now. It's her news to break.
