Wednesday Morning Thoughts

I’m still trying to sort out my feelings about all of the TV I crammed into my brain last night, which is, for the record:
• Brooklyn Nine-Nine
• Agents of SHIELD
• New Girl
• Person of Interest
• Chicago Fire
Tuesdays are going to kill me. Mostly because those are all shows I like to watch right away (with the exception of AoS, maybe) and now they’re all together and I’m not going to have a free Tuesday for a while. WHICH IS OKAY.

First up: Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Huh )

Keeping with the comedy: New Girl

DO NOT KILL THAT CAT, WINSTON )

And Now For Something Completely Angsty: Chicago Fire

Oh, Cruz, you traitor )

Speaking of Sarah Shahi: Person of Interest

My Love for Shaw, LET ME SHOW YOU IT )

And finally, Agents of SHIELD:

Overall Okay )

[fic] The Horrible Hawkeye Essay, The Magic of Tumblr, Girls' Night, The Rocketeerman

Title: The Horrible Hawkeye Essay
Fandom: Hawkeye
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Pairings: None
Characters: Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, Kate Bishop
Word Count: 364
Summary: Clint whines. Natasha makes him do it anyway.
Author’s Notes: I had an open prompt night on my Tumblr and I’m archiving some of the stories here. The prompt was to write any of my characters having difficulty with a writing assignment. This is what happened.

“Why does Coulson even need to know about things like childhood pets? Mine were elephants because of the circus. That’s not that interesting. ‘When I was nine, my pet was Bobo the elephant. He was big and gray. I liked him but he smacked me with his trunk. The end.’” )

Title: The Magic of Tumblr
Fandom: Captain Marvel
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Pairings: Carol/Jess
Characters: Carol Danvers, Jessica Drew, Natasha Romanoff
Word Count: 281
Summary: Carol and Jess introduce Natasha to something very, very complicated.

“Who else is going to send you fourteen asks about bathing products?” )

Title: Girls’ Night
Fandom: Chuck, The Avengers
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Pairings: None
Characters: Carina Miller, Jane Foster, Sarah Walker, Lady Sif
Word Count: 340
Summary: Four very unlikely friends meet up for a girls’ night. It probably won’t end well.

“Is this not a feast we celebrate tonight? I wore my finest helm.” She tapped the silver at her brow. “Was I not supposed to do that?” )

Title: The Rocketeerman
Fandom: The Avengers, The Rocketeer
Rating: PG
Warnings: None
Pairings: None
Characters: Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Natasha Romanoff, Cliff Secord
Word Count: 434
Summary: Natasha is captured by Loki. Cliff is about to die saving her. Tony Stark is not helping.
Author’s Notes: I think somebody typo’d, but I’m an awful person that couldn’t resist.

Tony couldn’t decide if the more impressive thing about him was the streamlined gold helm—with the rather large dent in it—he wore or the rocket pack strapped to his back, but either way: “Seriously?” )

Transformative Works Policy

Frea’s Transformative Works Policy:

If you’re going to do any of the following based on any of the stories I’ve written, non-fandom specific:

  • Meta Commentary
  • Podfic
  • Sequel**
  • Prequel
  • Missing Moment
  • Translation
  • Remix
  • Fanart
  • And much, much more

I require a pony.*

*I do not require a pony. I embrace all of these things happily and would love to see them exist and would be incredibly flattered by their existence. All I ask is that you credit the original work and contact me (here is my email, and you can PM me on ff-net, LJ,and Tumblr) to send me a link when you’re done so that I can faint and upon being revived share the link with all and sundry.

** One note on sequels. I will, of course, be happy to pass the link on to all fans of the original work and probably write you a glowing write-up if you choose to write a sequel to any of my stories. With some stories, though, I may choose not to read any sequels written (**coughcoughFATES**) because I simply have a terrible head-space around those stories and need to look after my own mental health first.

2012: A Year in Review

Chuck and Greater Stuff )

Now on to the meat of the post: I didn’t make resolutions for 2013. Resolutions, I feel, should be between you and your conscience, so I was disgusted to have mine from 2011 thrown in my face by a total stranger. I’d love to see some great things happen this year to people I love and people I know, I’d love to watch some awesome movies, read some wonderful stories, and make fantastic memories. But that’s as far as I’ll go with resolutions.

Now, a look at the year 2012 in writing and other stuff, as best my memory goes:

January - March )

April - August )

September - December )

Looking back on 2012, I made so many good friendships, met so many awesome people, got the chance to write some fun stories, and experienced some wonderful things. It had its down moments, but it had its good times, too. And I think I’ll choose to remember more of the good than the bad this year.

Some Statistics )

What a good year. Here’s to 2013! And another 1k a day year, I guess!

2012 draws to a close, so here are some memes to celebrate it in its final breaths.  Memes stolen from my friend sabra_n. Man, it would be so cool if I knew how to do dreamdwidth tags.

Once Upon A New Year's Eve

Once Upon a Time Feeeeeeeelings! )

In personal news, I work tomorrow, have Tuesday off, and then am back at work on Wednesday. Should be a fun few days. Lots of driving, some drinking, and a little chilling. I’m hoping to spend some time with my best friend and my nephew, and the puppies, of course. Best friend wants to go out tomorrow night, but bars aren’t really my scene, being noisy and full of people, and misanthropy is just so much more fun.

Hello to all of the new Chuck followers that wandered over here because of BillAtWork. Thanks for friending me. I’m not really that active in that fandom anymore, but I hope you like Livejournal.

ebooks and whatnots

Have a lot of random ebooks to produce and release—I promised a Chuck vs. the Sound of Music II ebook, and I have some of my own to make—but I went ahead and started compiling an ebook of all of the stories/art posted in the [livejournal.com profile] be_compromised Secret Santa challenge. The entries have started going up and every single one is wonderful. I’ve preformatted it so that each entry will have its banner and I’ll be able to slot in the authors whenever the reveals are made.

Even better than all of them (sorry, I’m vain!), though, is the one that my lovely person wrote for me, which has everything I never knew I wanted (Sleeping Beauty!Clint, Natasha being a BAMF and talking to Maria Hill with reasons and logic!, the Scarlet Witch!, kissing in car trunks!). Seriously, you should go read it here and shower the writer with compliments. I am inordinately jealous because I have never been able to write kissing very well, and this person just excels. **huggles fic**

How strange is life when you’re able to send your mother Yuletide recs? I’m, uh, asking for a friend.

Still have not seen Les Mis. I have Fandango Cash to see it because my dad got Bourne Legacy for Christmas (that was fun; I fell asleep on the couch on Christmas morning and woke to explosions and SURPRISE RENNER) and there was an offer on the box, but I just haven’t made it to a theater yet. [livejournal.com profile] sabra_n might actually try to strangle me if I don’t go soon, though.

The news is showing something that looks like it’s about the production of bullets. I looked up and thought that all of that gold meant it was Reese’s peanut butter cups (you know, the little ones you get at Halloween) and got really nervous, but whew. Just bullets.

Hey, messing with my miniature Reese’s cups is fighting words.

Christmas, Downton Abbey, and Yuletide Recommendations

Christmas stuff )

Downton Abbey )

But on to happier things! It’s Yuletide! I’ve been a little closer to it this year than before (though I decided not to participate) and it’s been wonderful so far. First, you know, there’s things like the Fix-It Fic for 50 Shades of Grey, and then there are these two Calvin and Hobbes/Hobbes and Bacon fics that are the most delightful things I’ve ever seen, and, you know, The Pirates! fanfic, which I didn’t ever think about before.

At the same time, there’s be-compromised’s Secret Santa Exchange going on. Two recs from that, too: In Other Words, Thursday which has fantastic Clint and Natasha on a mission exchange, and Wild Dedication, which is an outside observer fic and has fantastic Maria, Coulson, and Pepper interaction with the team. That said, all of the fic written so far has been wonderful, and you can read it on the Secret Santa tag.

Also, got a new layout. I just can’t help it. I like aqua blue.

[fic] Miracle

Title: Miracle
For: [livejournal.com profile] anuna_81
Rating: PG-13, warnings for violence, pregnancy, sex, etc. baby-fic!
Fandom: Avengers
Pairings: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanoff
Summary: She’s not a woman that believes in miracles, but a mission in Antigua leads to some very surprising consequences for two of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Length: 2902 words

Another entry in the "Fic and Dash" pool for the day. This one was supposed to be a lot shorter than it turned out to be. Happy Christmas Eve!

Title: Talking like Peter Lorre

Fandom: Avengers
Pairings: Clint Barton/Natasha Romanoff
Summary: Clint has a very important question for fellow zoologist, Dr. Natasha Romanoff.
Length: 1054 words

[fic] Badge and Shield

Title: Badge and Shield
Word Count: 1,575 words
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Avengers
Pairings (if any) : Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers, Maria Hill/Steve Rogers
Warnings (Non-Con/Dub-Con/Underage): Sexism, violence, action, mentions of rape (this is an umbrella warning for the universe), homicide, suicide, pretty much everything cops deal with.
Summary: Maria Hill knows that when people look at her, they see “woman.” Followed by “bitch” or “cop” or even “bitch cop.” Or: the one where Peggy Carter and Maria Hill work on the gang task force and are awesome partner detectives.
Notes: So [livejournal.com profile] anuna_81 wrote an awesome little start of a series where Clint is a single father and a cop and Natasha’s a dance teacher (which you can’t read unless you’re friends with her, so you’ll have to take my word: it’s fantastic). The rest of the Avengers fit in the police situation somehow (I’m not entirely sure how, except that Tony is Clint’s partner and they’re very Tango and Cash), and somehow or other, our comments got around to talking about where Maria Hill and Peggy Carter fit. Then I imagined them as buddy cops and this little ficlet was born in the comments.

I regret nothing.

Fringe Reactions

nonspecific Fringe reactions )

I need some fic and some feel-good reads to get me through this. Last year, the distressing Christmas episode came from Chuck, but that wasn’t a good sort of pain, that was Fedak, you’re the freaking worst, and not in a good way. The episode Santa Suit legitimately makes me angry whenever I think about it because it was an insult to my intelligence and to characters I loved. This year, Fringe is just hitting all of the notes in the lovely pain centers in my brain. To borrow a Tumblr phrase: “Right in the feels.”

It saddens me that there are only four episodes left. On the other hand, I’m really glad that, like Chuck, it was given a chance to end organically. Unlike Chuck, it has a good writer heading its writers’ room, so I’m approaching the ending of the show with hope.

Sorry to bash on Chuck so much, but I remembered how unironically terrible Santa Suit was, and I realize that I haven’t been insulting the show enough.

Hump Day Happenings

I had the most godawful migraine this morning (to the point where food was one of those things that happened to other people, not me), but I’ve since managed to kick it. I think. My head feels a little padded and cottony, like it’s stuffed full of something, but since I’m not actively whimpering, I don’t caaaaaare.

My condolences to my beta reader, who is only halfway through my Secret Santa story and has miles to go before he sleeps. When he received it, I think I heard a faint, helpless bleat from his direction. I hope his tears are warm comfort to him as he falls asleep every night.

Maybe I should buy him a Christmas gift or something.

Generalities, Austen, and Cameras

Finally rounding out my Austen education by getting through Northanger Abbey. I have attempted this book many times, but it always failed to grab me. Last night I picked it up because I’m doing a Twitter book club with some Downton friends and 100 pages later, my eyes were drooping closed but I just wanted to keep reading. Why do I always forget that there is fascinating banter to be had in Austen novels? Banter, my ultimate weakness! With charming and 19th century dialogue! Ugh, so good.

Today is going to be an interesting test of willpower because I’m avoiding Twitter (and about to add Tumblr to my list). The tragedy in Connecticut is abhorrent and visceral and my heart goes out to everybody affected: children, teachers, parents, the community. I don’t think it’ll do me any good to listen to people tweet angrily into the ether, however, so just stepping away is the best option.

Also, I sold my Canon. I’ll miss the camera (the white balance button on the body instead of buried in the menu was handy, lemme tell you), but it’s been doing nothing but gathering dust because I have Nikon glass and no adapter. Speaking of things that are gathering dust, is anybody interested in purchasing an iPad 2 (wifi only, great condition, price about $300)? I realized that it’s been sitting in my laptop case for three weeks without power, and that is probably a sign that I could just use the $300 for my trip next fall.

Speaking of cameras, it’s roughly five months until my sister’s wedding. If I’m going to be a respectable wedding photographer, I should probably start learning to pose people or something. Perhaps I should take a class or attend a seminar. Sigh. Also I need to find an all-black outfit and a beret (that was their request: I could get out of being a bridesmaid, provided I wore all black, a beret, and took the pictures. Every time I think I’m about to do something crazy, I just have to remember that this is my family).
